Verticutting

Verticutting, also known as Vertical Mowing, removes thatch by using multiple rotating blades to lift compacted plant debris to the surface.

Thatch is a layer of dead stems, stolons and roots that lies above the soil surface but below the green blades. Thatch builds up when the grass is cut too tall on a regular basis. This causes stems and stolons to overlap into a thick matted layer. As the layer thickens, water, nutrients, and pre-emergents cannot reach the soil. The lawn will thin, becoming prone to fungus, pests, and disease.

Once thatch starts to form, conditions develop that favor even more thatch. It will weaken and even kill a lawn if not prevented or removed.

A spongy soft feel under foot is evidence of too much thatch. Very thick layers cause uneven surfaces that are difficult to mow.

Verticutting Service is available April through June.

When a verticutter passes over a section of turf, results are visible. The material brought to the surface is dry and high volume.

Cleanup is required as debris must be removed to avoid reversing the verticut benefit. We offer three options to fit your budget:

  • Basic: you collect debris
  • Custom: we collect debris for curbside pickup or add to your compost pile
  • Complete: we collect and remove debris from the property.

Tip! Verticutting can be a dirty service! Prepare by watering your lawn 2 days before to reduce dust. Mow your lawn to desired height.
